The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

141 - CANCELING CLAIMS IN THE SABBATICAL YEAR

Deuteronomy 15:3 -- “Of a foreigner you may require it; but you shall give up your claim to what is owed by your brother.”

Some say that the commandment is obligatory only in the Land of Israel, and others make it obligatory everywhere.

The Mishnah declares: “If a man repays a debt in the Seventh Year, the sages are well pleased with him.”* Maimonides, however, maintains that the creditor may accept payment only if the debtor expressly insists on his doing so, and that the latter may render such payment only on condition of its being regarded as an absolute gift.**
